Conference on Approaches to the Qur’an in Sub-Saharan Africa

May 19–21, 2011

Textile Museum of Canada, May 19–21, 2011

Approaches to the Qur’an in sub-Saharan Africa brought together scholars from various academic disciplines with artists, students and community members to examine a range of issues concerning Islam and Muslim societies in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the Qur’an. The workshop explored the diverse ways in which the Qur’an has been used and interpreted throughout sub-Saharan Africa, particularly over the last two hundred years. The workshop was co-sponsored by The Institute of Ismaili Studies and York University and was being held in collaboration with the Textile Museum of Canada’s exhibition, Magic Squares: The Patterned Imagination of Muslim Africa in Contemporary Culture, curated by Patricia Bentley.
